How fair does the hull shape need to be to get acceptably accurate CFD results? This is the question we try to answer in this document in order to provide guidelines for the early design stage, where a faired hull may not be available. In this case, additional effort needs to be made to fair the hull only to get good CFD results, which makes them more expensive overall.
Three levels of fairness are studied in this document for the same hull and sailing conditions. The results are compared in terms of calm water resistance items:
- Total resistance,
- Viscous resistance,
- Pressure resistance,
- Dynamic sinkage and trim.
Below is a representation of different fairnes levels. Download the full white paper to see the results and more details.
